Blanton Seward
Art has always been a great love of mine. Illustration, sketching and
painting have profoundly affected my work.
I am Virginian born and bred and my family has deep roots here.
Never far from the James River, a primary source of inspiration for
my work. I love to portray the restitution of its indigenous wildlife on
canvas.
It is my belief that sketching and painting the river this way affects the
way it is perceived and treated. That being said, 60% of my works are
of subjects other than the James, and portraiture is an important part
of these.
I worked in varying forms of art and graphics my entire professional
life. A total of 37 years as graphic artist, 20 as freelance. During this
time I produced layouts, designs, illustrations and even did some copy
writing (both digitally and hands-on) for commercial advertising.
In 2005 (at long last) I retired to full-time painting and have won
several prizes in local competitions. Two, third places in Crossroads
Art Center and a Second Place at Art Works.
"I have long
anticipated a time
when I could devote
myself more fully to
sketching and painting
subjects of personal
interest. As a freelance
artist digital creations
were a challenge. All
the while, however, I
felt somewhat
neglectful of hands-on
artistic expression."
