Richard Burleson
Dick is a native Richmonder, born here in 1941. As a child and an
“Exxon brat” he had the good fortune to live in many places – Norfolk,
Holland, England, Baltimore, Connecticut to name a few places. After
graduating from high school, he attended The University of Virginia,
first taking Civil Engineering, but ended up earning his BA and an MA
in English after a stint in the army, where he was stationed in
Washington State and Berlin in 1962 when “The Wall” was erected.
Dick taught Junior College English for a few years, worked for the
State of Vermont for two years, spent nine years working for what is
now Bank of America, was a municipal/industrial water well drilling
contractor for three years and spent from 1982 to 2000 in sales,
selling industrial pumps, equipment and services to municipalities
and industry.
Though having no formal training in photography, Dick has been
taking pictures since he bought his first camera, a twin lens reflex, in
1958, and he’s been taking pictures ever since. In 2000 he started
Burleson Photography and did work primarily in portraiture and
weddings.
Since 2005 he has been distancing himself from those specialties to
go more his “own way” and simply enjoy the media and the freedom to
explore new directions. Mostly, that direction has been in the many
different forms of digital photography, the best examples of which are
his floral prints. Expect to see more of nature in works to come,
particularly birds.
Dick has been a member of Bon Air Artists Association (BAAA) and
Uptown Gallery since 2003 and is currently CEO and Co-Director of
Uptown Gallery. His work can be seen at various Bon Air Artists’
venues in and around Metro-Richmond, at Uptown and at his website.
