Cari Still
I was born in Charleston, S.C. in July of '65; close enough to
Independence Day that I grew up believing that the nation was celebrating
merely on my behalf. I know better now, but I still like to pretend. My
elementary years were spent in the suburbs of Atlanta, where I "made the
grade" and Mom and Dad were upwardly mobile and easily "kept up with
the Jones'."  In my early teens, my parents informed me we were moving
to my grandparents farm in small town rural Alabama. I wanted to die.

Fortunately, though, as quickly as I busied myself lamenting for my old life,
I just as quickly began to take pleasure in my new one. I was pleasantly
surprised as my eyes widened to a landscape of unscripted beauty. There
were stars instead of street lights! Crickets and distant trains then
became my lullabies.

To my delight, and her own, my mother started to paint again. I began to
draw. My notebooks in school were covered inside and out with doodles
and designs. "These ARE my notes...", I would reply to disapproving
lookers-on (teachers/parents/etc.).

I have never let schooling interfere with my education. Although I cannot
seem to hold an Algebra equation in my head for 2 seconds, I will never
forget how my art instructors at Piedmont Virginia Community College
helped me to find my voice and to realize my potential.

In my attempt to depict crop circles in simple form, I am surprised, maybe
a little startled, at how the inherent mathematical rhythm of the layout
lends to such a natural and pleasingly undevised harmony on the page.
The history and the science behind the occurrences of crop circles is
purely mystifying in itself.

I aspire to create as many renditions of these incredible and beautiful
designs as I can possibly muster.
Nature and mankind
constantly inspire my
amazement and
imagination. I am
currently inspired,
obsessed with images of
crop circles and the
accompanying math of
fractal geometry.
