"The new exhibit at
Uptown Gallery,
“Docents Create”,
presents not only an
uncommonly-seen
side of the docents of
the Virginia Museum
of Fine Arts, but it
reminds us of the
unique and special
institution we in
Richmond possess,
and of all that the
museum has to offer.
It also emphasizes
the symbiosis
between the museum
and the community.
The VMFA docents
volunteer their time
and energy toward
the museum’s success,
but they also gain
from the creativity
that surrounds them
there, and then share
that creativity with
the public in their
own art. They hope
all who visit their
exhibit will be
encouraged to follow
it with a visit to the
many exhibits of the
Virginia Museum of
Fine Arts.
“Docents Create”
offers a variety of
works, including fine
art photography, oil
and watercolor
paintings. Subject
matter ranges from
abstracts to realistic
landscapes. All works
are created by the
volunteer docents of
the VMFA; some are
professional artists,
while others are
talented amateurs.
What Chile Be Dis", is an excellent example of docent creativity. It is
a spoof on Faberge, in honor of the current blockbuster Faberge
exhibit. The painting combines the top of a gilded African linguist's
staff (also in the museum’s collection) with Faberge’s imperial
Czarevich Egg.
