| “Traveler’s Rest: Paintings of Exploration and Loss” is an exhibit by two explorers, though one explores the sights and sounds of a foreign country while the other turns inward to explore her own feelings. Well-known Richmond artist Beverly Perdue goes abroad to explore the countryside of Tuscany and the watery byways of Venice with images painted en plein air. In her “Empty Chair” paintings, Patrice Reese looks within herself to explore the feelings and memories evoked by a sister’ s untimely death. Although they explore different areas, the artists approach painting from a similar point of view. Both push the envelope with color and design; neither believes in “playing it safe”. Both feel that rules are made to be broken, and that sometimes rule-breaking is the only way to achieve the desired effect. The exhibit runs November 1 through December 31, 2011. |
